Pubs & Shops in Althorne

Sadly over the years there has been a decline in the number of shops and services in the village as a result of both the popularity of supermarkets, where food is cheaper because of the economy of scale, and the greater mobility of the population due the increased use of private cars. Although pubs in the village have not reduced in number, they are increasingly having to rely on the provision of good food to survive due to drink drive regulations.

The Black Lion

The Black Lion Public House is a Grade II listed building built in 1770 on a site of an unlicensed alehouse. However it has undergone substantial refurbishment and extension during the 19th and 20th centuries. The present owners have made the most significant additions and improvements.

The Huntsman and Hounds

The Huntsman and Hounds pub is a quaint thatched country pub situated in Green Lane. Although it has an Althorne postal address, the pub falls within the boundary of Latchingdon Parish Council.

The Three Horse Shoes

The Three Horse Shoes pub is situated on the Burnham Road in Upper Althorne. 

The pub has a a large car park and a garden with plenty of play equipment for children.

Althorne is fortunate to still have a Post Office considering the closures which have been occurring in the rural areas.
