Below is listed the addresses and contact telephone numbers of NHS Hospitals that serve the catchment's area.

The hospitals at Braintree have been included because sometimes patients are referred to consultant's clinics at these hospitals if the nearest hospitals clinic is fully booked. Referrals to the more distant hospitals generally happen in order to comply with central governments target for 'patient waiting time for a consultation'.

The Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital has been included because it houses The Essex Cardiothoracic Centre

How to get there

All Directions are from the Post Office in lower Burnham Road.

It is possible to get to St Peter's Hospital and the Chelmsford and Essex Centre on the 31X service direct from Althorne.

St Peter's Hospital, Maldon

For St Peter's Hospital, Maldon, get off the bus at the St Peter's Hospital bus stop in Spital Road. See Map The red 'A' symbol indicates the location of St Peter's Hospital.

Chelmsford and Essex Centre

For the Chelmsford and Essex Centre get of the bus at the Parkway Mildmay Car Park stop and it's just a short walk to the Hospital. See Map The red 'A' symbol indicates indicates the location of Chelmsford and Essex Centre.

Broomfield Hospital

To get to Broomfield Hospital take the First Bus 31X or 31B service from Althorne to Chelmsford and change at the main Chelmsford bus station onto either the First Bus 70/70X, 352, 47 or 33 bus service to Broomfield or the 42 service to Broomfield, opposite Chelmsford Railway Station. See map

St John's Hospital, Chelmsford

To get to the St John's Hospital take the First Bus 31X or 31B service from Althorne to Chelmsford and change at the main Chelmsford bus station onto either of the following First Bus services:

42 to Galleywood

100 to Lakeside

For St John's Hospital get off at the 'Bruce Grove' stop, the second stop in Wood Street (The first stop is Tesco's). See Map

Note! St John's Hospital is due to close in October 2010 when the new extension to Broomfield Hospital is opened.

William Julian Courtauld Hospital, Braintree

To get to William Julian Courtauld Hospital take the First Bus 31X or 31B service from Althorne to Chelmsford and change at the main Chelmsford bus station onto the First bus 70/70X or the 352 Braintree service. For the William Julian Courtauld Hospital get off at the 'Acorn Avenue' bus stop in London Road, Braintree, and it is then about a 100 yard walk in the direction in which the bus is travelling. The hospital is on the left. See Map

St. Michaels Hospital, Braintree

To get to St. Michaels Hospital in Braintree take the First Bus 31X or 31B service from Althorne to Chelmsford and change at the main Chelmsford bus station onto the First Bus 70/70X or the 352 Braintree service from the bus station in Chelmsford. See map. Get off the bus in London Road at the Clare Road stop. Head northeast along the London Road to Clare Road. Turn left into Clare Road and then turn right at the fourth turning on the right into Hunnable Road. At the bottom of Hunnable Road cross the Rayne Road to the hospital.

Alternatively, stay on the 70/70X or the 352 bus until it gets to the Braintree Bus Park and then change onto the 132 going in the direction of the Springwood Industrial Estate. Get off at the St Michaels Hospital stop in Rayne Road.

Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital - Essex Cardiothoracic Centre

To get to Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital - Essex Cardiothoracic Centre, there are two options:

By bus, which involves going to Chelmsford on the 31X and then out to Basildon on the First Bus 100 service from the main bus station. See map.
By train from Althorne Station to Wickford, then take either the 25, 25A or 25B to Basildon Hospital. See map
